I don’t think I’m gonna watch Yashahime after all

WARNING: Potential Spoilers

I’ll preface all this by saying, first off, to each their own.

As many of you guys are probably already aware, it seems that Rin, according to the new IY sequel Hanyou no Yashahime, is the mother of Sesshoumaru’s twin daughters, Towa and Setsuna. For me, personally, this is disappointing news. Not because I’m primarily a SessKag shipper, but because ultimately I think it cheapens and unnecessarily sexualizes a relationship between two major characters that was so special and pure in the original canon. The fact that Sesshoumaru was once a guardian figure to Rin only makes it that much more cringe-y.

(I laid out more of my thoughts on this in a previous post, so I’ll try not to belabor it again here.)

I don’t think there’s anyone out there who didn’t see this SessRin outcome as a distinct possibility, but if you’re like me, then I’m sure you were crossing your fingers, hoping otherwise. Part of the reason why I was off tumblr for a couple months was because I was dreading scrolling through and seeing confirmation of Rin being the mother. And wouldn’t you know, just recently after logging on and checking my feed, there it was: a gif showing Sesshoumaru by Rin’s bedside, post-childbirth, followed by him plucking up the two newborn girls and taking off with them.

Sigh.

Yeah, I gotta say I was rather on the fence about checking out this series to begin with, but now I think I’ve lost all motivation. As much as I want the adventure to continue, I just don’t think I can stomach it. The only thing worse to me than saying goodbye to the characters you love is to see those characters besmirched by inferior storytelling – or even worse, forgotten altogether.

Past experience with other sequels has made me wary. I was, and still am, a huuuuuge Final Fantasy 7 fan. It was the first fandom I ever wrote fanfic for, and it’ll always have a special place in my heart. That said, the sequel movie Advent Children is a fucking travesty in my opinion. Boring takes on classic characters; random new Sephiroth-wannabe characters that were totally flat; nebulous, hare-brained plotting; and a total lack of all the heart of the original RPG, it couldn’t have disappointed me more. If I could go back and un-watch it, I’d do it in a flash.

But I digress.

The story can end wherever you want it to. And to me, the Inuyasha series ends with the final chapter of the manga. So I’ll leave off with this:

Inuyasha, Ch. 558 – Tomorrow

😉

  1. I was feeling the same way. I’m not surprised but I’m disappointed with the direction they decided to take with Seeshoumaru and Rin. Its kinda like the whole thing with Morgan Freeman and his step granddaughter, yeah they’re not related but its still a bit messed up. Am I making an scenes today?

    1. Yiiiikes, never knew that about Morgan Freeman…. 😨

But yeah, same feels there – messed up for sure.

Great hearing from you, Nicole ❤️ Hope you’re doing well!

  2. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the matter. I understand your reasons for not wanting to watch the Yashahime series.
To me, the story ended a long time ago, and then I entered the world of fanfiction and dream of many possible ways for the story to continue/change/end differently.
That way, story by story, I ended up being open to all different scenarios and I found out there are things I like and things I tend to like less. That’s fine and I’d like to keep it that way.
Maybe, watching the sequel and actually SEE the story taking a certain route might ruin my fun, maybe not. Right now I feel like I’m not quite ready to find out. Maybe in the future?
Not sure I’m making any sense here 😀
Anyway, I thank you for your stories and, once again, compliment you for your writing skills. Totally in love with The Pact and patiently waiting for an update. (I’ll be happy with any update in the meanwhile. <3)
    HUGS! <3 <3 <3

    1. “ To me, the story ended a long time ago, and then I entered the world of fanfiction and dream of many possible ways for the story to continue/change/end differently.” – could not agree more!! 😭

I guess I should say, never say never, but I just don’t see myself wanting to go there with Yashahime. From the tidbits I’ve gathered about it, it smacks of the kind of fanfic I’d rather just scroll past 😂

I so appreciate the support Amy ❤️ I will 100% be returning to The Pact, just can’t say for now when that will be. 2020 was a shitshow, and all my writing plans went by the wayside 😔 so to say I’m playing catch-up is an understatement lol

Anyway, thanks again & take care!!! 💕

  3. Saaaame. So disappointed. Really hate how it seems everything has to be sexualized. I really thought their relationship dynamic in the original was sweet and fun. Father-daughter/guardian just feels right with them. For me, I’ll be sticking with the OG Inuyasha and not participating in the shenanigans in the sequel. Can’t wait for your next update, Char!

    1. Word. Like, seriously, why can’t the creators just leave a good thing alone?!?! It’s so frustrating 😖

Lol. But anyway, thank you Mim!!! 😊💕

    1. Oh no, could they not even get the original voice actor to come back?? Damn. That would grate on me too…

  4. I have so many feelings about this but won’t have time to post all my thoughts right now.

So just saying right now I miss you Char and glad to hear your thoughts. I completely get it – I had the same concerns and kinda NOT happy that all those SessRin shippers have been doing their happy dances all over social media. (No offense to any here, but I think most of us here are in the SessKag camp?)

I did watch up through episode eight and am now at an impasse as to continuing or not. So many competing feelings lol I will come back to share my thoughts later if comments are still open.

    Molly

    1. Molly!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Great to hear from you, girl! Omg I would absolutely love to hear your thoughts!! (I’ve been slowly but surely opening the comments back up since I crawled out from under my rock a few weeks ago. Depression is a bitch.)

Anyway! Yes 100% the SessRin shippers have gotten a little too big for their britches, as my Granny would say 😂 It’s not a good look, but then again there have always been some obnoxious folks in that camp so not terribly surprising….

      Hope you’re doing well!! 💕💕💕

  5. Same! I don’t like the plot of the kids not knowing their parents and the relationships that came to be from it. It’s like they want to distance the old fanbase and start on a completely different path for a new fanbase (younger generation) who won’t really give a crap about the original OG characters or their story. Kind of like Boruto springing from Naruto, but at least the parents and OG characters that are still alive have active roles in the series and aren’t memories or flashbacks. *sigh*
