SessKag Series: The Pact, Part 140

This entry is part 140 of 141 in the series The Pact [Ongoing]

Kagome’s trek from her home to the outskirts of Edo was a frantic blur. Shin kept pace with her, neither streaking ahead to scout nor falling behind to sniff. He padded along right beside her, soundless, with his pointed ears and plumed tail lowered. Kagome didn’t know whether her distress had subdued him, or whether it was the forbidding aura that loomed beyond.

She worried about Shin being with her, but she’d have worried if he wasn’t. And anyway, it was a moot point besides. With Inuyasha down for the count, Kagome couldn’t have left her infant son at home, even if Shin himself hadn’t already taken the initiative to pursue her.

There was nothing for it. Kagome pushed her doubts from her mind with a sigh. With Shin by her side, she pressed on.

It was impossible to say, as the dark stormclouds gathered thick above them, whether the calamitous atmosphere was an outpouring of Sesshoumaru’s black mood, or mere coincidence. Either way, Kagome panted to breathe in the dense air that oppressed her. Thunder boomed on high. Lightning splintered the leaden skies. Heavy-laden winds tore past, lashing cool and damp across her face. It was too warm now for snow, maybe even for sleet, but Kagome could already feel how the cold rain would pierce her like steel bullets when it began to fall.

She drew her shawl close around her shoulders. Mounting the last hill, she slushed through the ice-melt that churned the dead grass of the field to a thick, prickly paste. On the ridge ahead, Kagome spied him at last through the gloom—a pale specter of pure seething menace, glaring east.

“Sesshoumaru!” Kagome called out.

Sesshoumaru turned. Claws of lightning ripped across the gloomy horizon behind him, green-edged in Kagome’s perception. An attendant roar of thunder sounded, amplified to her hearing. When his eye fell upon hers, Sesshoumaru’s youki whipped and blazed with such ferocity that Kagome drew back, as Shin advanced with hackles raised. His black claws stabbed into the earth between Kagome and Sesshoumaru. Lowering his sledge-shaped head, he fixed his red-eyed glare upon Sesshoumaru and snarled.

Though Kagome’s reiki purified the misamic air as she breathed it, her throat still choked with raw anguish at the sight. Her poor baby…

Sesshoumaru looked upon Shin, bristling in hopeless opposition to him. Sesshoumaru’s hostile demeanor subsided. Shin relaxed as Kagome gulped down her first full breath.

“Sesshoumaru, please—”

“Beseech me not, you duplicitous woman.” In Sesshoumaru’s eye there was a flare of venom more scorching and terrible yet. “Inuyasha may be the prince of fools, but I am not. We both know that Rin on her own would never defy me. It was you who pushed her to commit this foolish rebellion.”

“I wasn’t going to deny it,” Kagome said, raising her voice over the tumult. “Yes, Sesshoumaru—I encouraged her. She’s been miserable without Kohaku, and he without her. So I told Rin-chan to follow her heart—and no matter how furious you are over that, I don’t regret it!”

“‘To follow her heart,’” Sesshoumaru said with cold contempt. “You poured your fool’s advice into her ear. You misled her with your nonsense, as if it would serve her any better than it has served you.”

Kagome’s face fell, stricken. But Sesshoumaru was unmoved.

“Who are you to advise anyone?” he said cuttingly. “You who have made such a mess of things? Worse still, you deceived me toward this foolish end. You made me believe you wished to be with me in order to lure me away.”

“No,” Kagome realized aloud, so soft and pained that not even he could hear her over the howling wind. “It was the other way around. I leapt at the opportunity to be with you.”

  1. I genuinely am so attached to this story its an issue, thank you for the update Char! my heart is rimming over.

  2. Okaaaay. Now Sesshomaru’s ire is making a lot more sense to me. He’s convinced Kagome left with him only so that the marriage could take place. Awwww, Sesshomaru, you cutie. You got your feelings hurt. I was like, there’s no way he’s THIS upset about Rin and Kohaku getting married (especially when it’s already said and done). Hehehe, I’m back to liking him again. And SHIN–MY BABY. So cute how he’s protective enough over his mother to glare down his menacing ass dad.

    <333 Thanks for the update

    1. Yeah Sess is feeling sore XD So glad you enjoyed Shin’s protectiveness here!

Thanks so much for sharing, bella, and hope you enjoy the next chapter!! <3

  3. I figured he was super upset because he thinks Kagome only wanted to be with him to give Rin an out. I hope she can explain herself. But she also needs to talk to Inuyasha

    1. Yep there’s a lot that needs to be aired-out, for sure..

Thanks for sharing, Kathy! Hope you enjoy the next part!! <3

  4. Shin is such a little hero I love him 😭❤️🩷💕💖❣️

This is their most dramatic hilltop argument yet. I’m kinda looking forward to it.

    1. “This is their most dramatic hilltop argument yet. ” – hahaha yeah i think you are right XD

      Thanks for sharing, friend!! <3

  5. Shin’s got some of Inuyasha’s can’tbackdownno mattertheodds-ness in him lol Such a cute lil hardheaded boy! Sesshomaru is being a little bit of a drama queen, but I get it. Things are a mess right now, that’s for sure! Can’t wait for the next installment

    1. “Shin’s got some of Inuyasha’s can’tbackdownno mattertheodds-ness in him lol” – haha so true – Shin’s a plucky little guy XD

      Thanks for sharing, mim!! <3

  6. Ahh, Sesshoumaru latched onto the worst possible interpretation of Kagome’s motives/involvement here. It’s quite telling, too, given that Kagome’s only duplicity in this has been towards Inuyasha and her village community–but not with Sesshoumaru.

Whereas one could argue that Kagome has been the main target of Sesshoumaru’s own duplicity.

    Thank you! 💜

    1. “Whereas one could argue that Kagome has been the main target of Sesshoumaru’s own duplicity.” – a very good point! 🙂

Thanks so much for sharing, friend! Hope you enjoy the next part <3

  7. Hahaha…Sesshoumaru is so self righteous, he would sleep with his half brother’s wife and sire a child with her to deceive his half brother…what a pig! Kagome needs to leave that place with her son and not bother looking back!! Who could blame her. Didn’t he ever want Rin to have anyone? Why? That is mean and I hope Kagome can see this as well as Sango going after Inuyasha because Inuyasha is a fool and doesn’t even realize that Sango is trying to lure him away to help raise her children. Thanks for the update!

    1. Thank you, Redwolf!! Love hearing your thoughts on all the dynamics at play! Hope you enjoy where things go from here <3

  8. Sess looked like he was about to go and rip a new one into Kohaku ahaha. That has made me wonder though – how the heck did Rin manage to convince him? He’s got a whole clan to carry on his back and he still thought it was a good idea to start beef with his demonic father-in law smh.

Aside from that, I sense that we’re getting into the Open Feelings chapter. Hope they manage to resolve this issue before Inuyasha pops back up :’D

    1. “how the heck did Rin manage to convince him? ” – hahaha that is a very good question! Love finds a way I guess 😉

Thanks so much for sharing, oskorreia! Hope you enjoy the next part!! <3

  9. I give Shin a gold medal for Bravery 🎖️

Also I empathise with Sess’s feelings but it also tickles me how his display of anger is as dramatic as Howl, who called on the Forces of Darkness when Sophie dyed his hair

    1. Hahahaha I love that movie so much and did not even make that connection – but it’s so spot-on XDDD

      Thanks for sharing, hanayome!! <3

  10. Shin defended his mama alright but it’s against a bigger dog than we expected 😂 Props to him for bravely following the assignment. 🐕🏆🌟

  11. Tbh……… they’re both silly 😂

Like yeah, Rin is fifteen. Kagome as a modern millenial should’ve had a more informed take on this marriage than the rest of Edo but she turned out to be their prime advocate. That’s one way to see it.

Sess though? AHEM. He called her (perhaps miguided) impassioned view ‘nonsense’ but I’d be very interested to know how HE would’ve acted if an equally young Kagome had come to him all lovestruck. Would HER following her heart be nonsense to him then? How long has he been carrying a torch for her? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

    1. “Would HER following her heart be nonsense to him then? ” – hahaha touché!! Something tells me he’d have had a slightly different take 😉

Thanks so much for sharing, Inupapa!! <3

  12. people have been saying ‘calm before the storm’ and now a literal storm has come🤣 thunder! green lightning! the ice husband’s mood is a lot

    1. Lol it really is XD A literal storm has arrived haha

Thanks for sharing, rehizakki! Hope you enjoy the next chapter!! <3

  13. Ah, the sting of being on the receiving end of Top 10 Anime Betrayals by the wifey. Sess thought it was only gonna happen to Inuyasha but he ended up eating it too. Such is the fate of the older sibling 😔

By the way, I wonder where Rin and Kohaku are eloping to? It feels like they have a better chance of outrunning a bear on their hands and knees than fool a dog demon’s nose. What about Kohaku’s budding clan? What were they thinking? 😅

    1. “Ah, the sting of being on the receiving end of Top 10 Anime Betrayals by the wifey. ” – woohoo, I’m honored! XD

Eloping certainly seems like a risky proposition – thanks so much for sharing your thoughts on the scene, catmechanic (love the alias btw XD)! <3

    1. Hahaha yeah I think you are right XD High drama here

Thanks for sharing, friend! Hope you enjoy the fallout XD!! <3

  14. Kagome told Rin to elope but then she ALSO eloped so back then I was like “aight no comment”. I get why Sess would think it was a diversion though, what with the timing.

Still, I think Sess is forgetting that Kagome might not have planned to return to Edo at all if he hadn’t encouraged her to face her fears (There’s a pretty amusing parallel here). So she couldn’t have left solely to deceive him.

    1. “Still, I think Sess is forgetting that Kagome might not have planned to return to Edo at all if he hadn’t encouraged her to face her fears” – a very good point! He certainly did push her to return…

Thanks so much for sharing, sesshousimp!! Hope you enjoy the next installment! <3
