SessKag Series: The Pact, Part 124

This entry is part 124 of 144 in the series The Pact [Ongoing]

Knowing what to expect this time, Kagome barely felt disoriented at the stomach-flipping sensation she experienced when Sesshoumaru ferried them away to his demonic mountain keep. Her worries were for Shin. Would he be anxious? Would he be scared?

The moment her feet touched the ground on that sparkling, wind-swept slope, she looked to her baby. Nuzzled against her chest, Shin peered up, his blue eyes perfectly serene. Since she wasn’t frightened, she reasoned, neither was he. Then on closer inspection she saw that he wasn’t quite looking at her. Her eyes followed his, straying up to the demon lord beside them. Shin trusted her implicitly, she knew. But he trusted Sesshoumaru, too.

Entrained snow swirled glittering through the alpine breeze. Shin raised himself up, swiping at the overlarge snowflakes, as Kagome breathed in the crisp cool air like a draught. It refreshed her more than she’d anticipated, to be back here again.

She loved Edo. She loved her friends and fellow villagers. But she couldn’t deny that she felt restricted there. Not physically so much as spiritually. The expectations of others weighed upon her, an invisible burden that mounted over time. It wasn’t something she was consciously aware of. But now that she was here, she appreciated it by contrast. It was a sense of confinement that fell away from her as she gazed out over the snowy valley with its frosted trees and jewel-blue lakes. She felt free here. She felt herself here.

It made her heart ache to admit it, but it was true.

“Are you cold?” Sesshoumaru asked.

Kagome shook her head. But he took down his fur from his shoulder and draped it over her anyway. Soft ethereal warmth pervaded her. Shin grabbed for the train of fur as soon it curled around him. Breezing into his humanoid demonic form, he tugged the dense white fluff into his fanged mouth and chomped down on it with all his might. Kagome’s eyes darted to Sesshoumaru, but he didn’t seem to mind. Then again he was so stoic, it could be hard to tell.

“That doesn’t bother you?” she asked.

“No,” Sesshoumaru said. “They’re only milk fangs.”

‘Milk fangs’ or not, Kagome didn’t doubt that those sharp pearly little canines could cut her up. But since she wasn’t the one being gnawed, she didn’t protest it.

“Oh. Okay.”

Sesshoumaru didn’t say anything back to this. He was just gazing at her in that unnerving, reflective way of his. Under the weight of his silent regard, she shifted. A bit of heat rose to her cheeks.

“Um, should we go inside?” she said, glancing to the silvery, amethyst-capped tower gleaming beyond them. “I’d like to put this bag down and get settled in a bit. And then maybe…”

She trailed off, blushing deeper as she realized she had nothing after ‘and then.’ Her mouth had run on ahead of her. Now her mind was struggling to catch up, and the suggestions it offered all struck her as more or less propositional.

“…We can go for a walk,” she finished lamely.

Sesshoumaru’s golden eyes flickered. “If you wish.”

  1. Woooow, the descriptions!!! So beautiful, even I felt at peace reading it.

Maaaan, Shin just keeps getting cuter and cuter 🥹. His interactions w Sesshomaru will be the death of me!

    1. Yayy! The timing of this scene really worked out great! Thanks so much (and love the ‘Inupapa Claws’! 💞)

      💕

  2. It’s always nice reading chapters were they’re not arguing 🥰 (most of the time Kagome starts them, lol)their chemistry really shows in moments like this. And who doesn’t love to see Sess interact with his son, they’re already bonding! Shin knows who his daddy is.

    1. Yeahh it’s nice to write them getting along for a change 😅

So glad you enjoyed the scene, Maya!! Thanks so much 💕

  3. Shin makes me really eager to know what he’ll grow into 🙂 It’s hard to gauge his personality now since he’s still a baby, but I think he’ll become a very interesting little prince. Already he’s bold, protective, and adventurous just like his parents🥰

    1. So glad you’re enjoying baby Shin’s portrayal so far, Kova!! 🥰 hints of both Sess & Kags are shining through!😉

Thanks so much for sharing! 💕

  4. Honestly, in this chapter, I felt the calm alongside Kagome. The village felt so suffocating, and I am so happy that Kagome had left to unwind. I look forward to what happens next!

    1. So glad you enjoyed the change of scenery, Pixie! Thanks so much for sharing & hope you enjoy the next chapter!! 💕

  5. If I were Sesshomaru I’d be so suspicious like why the sudden change of attitude towards me? I’m not enemy number 1 anymore? Hmmmm

  6. Yesssssss, Kagome… go for a walk. Walk your way right into Sesshōmaru’s mouth. Or other body parts. 😈
Seriously though this is progressing nicely. I have a feeling she’s due for at least one more return to Edo to really drive home how much she doesn’t belong there…. But I’m kinda hoping we just live happily ever after as a family of three in our nice cozy and magical mountain tower. I know your writing too well to expect such an ending, though… SO BRING ON THE ANGST.

    1. Hahaha love it, Uissuteffu!! Hope you enjoy the rest of the mountain scene 😉

Thanks so much for sharing! 💕

  7. :O

I just had a brainwave and then remembered what Sess mentioned in a flashback:

“The land was mine already. Fealty and tribute are what I have won. The displaced inuyoukai will live peaceably within my domain—in the high northern mountains and the white skies above, where our ancestors once roamed together, in ages past.”

Is THIS near those mountains??? Will we meet other inuyoukai!!! Other inuyoukai pups?!?!! Omg!!!
