Extricating her old trusty yellow backpack, Kagome crammed it full to bulging for herself and Shin. She’d stuffed in all the essentials for a three-day’s trip and then some. Shin watched her silently from his crib all the while. He stood up as best he could while he supported himself on the rails. Glancing to him, Kagome was struck once again by how strange of a baby he was, in human form or otherwise. The realization emboldened her as she crossed over to him and picked him up. She fit him into the carrier sling he was fast outgrowing and exited the hut.

The snow outside had partially melted, reforming into a glaze of dirty ice. The stale snow crunched under Kagome’s footsteps as she made her way across the village. Here and there, she waved to a passing villager, but she didn’t engage other than this. She kept her eyes trained ahead as she crossed the perimeter of Edo proper and ventured into the skeletal wilderness beyond.

This was Inuyasha’s Forest. It was a fact she couldn’t dismiss as she wended her way along the old dirt trail, littered with the brown husks of frosted weeds and faded from disuse by her most of all. The Bone-Eater’s Well loomed before her in the distance. She drew up beside it and brushed away the snow piled high on its weathered ledge. 

With one hand braced on the old wooden planking, Kagome peered down into the well’s tunneling darkness. At her breast, Shin peeped over the edge with her. Softly, he whimpered.

“You can feel the magic, can’t you, baby?” Kagome said to him, touching his satin cheek. “I know it might seem scary, but your grandma’s down there, waiting on the other side. Your uncle and great-grandpa, too. They’d all love to see you. I know they would.”

Shin’s blue eyes flicked from the well shaft to her. Kagome drew back, cradling him to her chest. She bowed her head over him. Her eyes burned, welling.

“I’d love to see them, too.”

She sat down on the ledge, still holding Shin to her. She rocked him gently, rocked them both. The more she thought about it, the more she didn’t know what she was even doing here. She’d told herself for so long that she could never go back that now that she was here, she wondered whether she still even could. Then she told herself that this was all beside the point.

Coming to the well was only a detour. When she sensed the stir of Sesshoumaru’s presence, she felt both torn and relieved.

“What are you doing here?” he asked, striding forward. “You said that it was unsafe for you to return to your time.”

“I know,” Kagome said, standing from the ledge. “I was just feeling homesick, that’s all.”

“Is it?”

“No,” she said, sincerely. Her eyes raised to his. “I just wanted to get away from here. Just for a few days.”

Sesshoumaru remained silent for a moment. His golden eyes trailed over her face.

“Say what you want.”

“Take me away,” she said quietly, lowering her gaze to Shin. “Us. To that place in the mountains, where we went once before.”

Sesshoumaru extended his clawed hand to her. Kagome took it. He pulled her and Shin to him, into his arms.

    With that being said I think Inuyasha is lying about where he’s going and what he is doing. Better yet who he is doing! Sess/kag is finally on their way but I feel like Inuyasha is already going to be there.

    But that’s just my guess! Thank you again for spoiling us rotten 😩. It feels like Christmas already and the month just started 🥰.

  6. Knew it!! I think she wants to see what could be (what hopefully will be) when she comes clean. I think it’ll help solidify that being with him is the right choice and make it a bit easier for her to confess. She’s stayed with Inu out of loyalty but deep down they both must know it doesn’t feel right to stay together.

  10. I’m finally happy she decided to leave with him. Especially since they’re both Sesshomaru’s family. What sucks is that she hasn’t revealed the truth to the one person that deserves it.

    I hope she does that soon.

    I’m so ready for Shin & Sess bonding time. They haven’t reached the hyperactive, high-pitched screaming toddler stage yet, but Shin’s inu form is a step ahead. Sess will learn 😈

    And I have a feeling……… Kagome wants them to bond over these few days so they’d have each other if something happens to her (*whisper* failsafe maneuver)

  13. I wonder what will Inuyasha do when she finally spills the beans… He might try to kill her… Because this affair has gone on for too long without him knowing of it. Man this is gonna be horrible for inuyasha when he finds out, unless he already knows and is just going along with the program just to belong and have a family.

  14. Sesshoumaru was totally ready to stop playing nice and snag her if she climbed down that well, wasn’t he 😂

    I’m so excited for the next update. I’ve been wondering about the place in the mountain and I think it suits them. Inuyasha is the type to settle with what’s familiar, but Sess and Kagome share a touch of wildness and wanderlust between them. They’d thrive together with Shin, and it might help her center herself again.
