Series Updates

I get questions from time to time about the statuses of the various series on this site. As those of you who have been following the blog for a while may know, this site serves as my writing lab, where I can quickly and easily post content as I hammer it out. I think this has been a good working model for me as a writer (and hopefully for y’all as readers) because it’s allowed me to keep up the posting momentum pretty regularly over the past several years. (There have been a few hiccups, of course…but with changes to my RL workload and just getting more proficient at the craft, for over a year now updates have been posted at least weekly – which to me is lightyears of improvement from the crippling months or years long writer’s block that used to plague me)

With that said, how regularly a particular series is going to be updated has been ambiguous at best. Even to me πŸ˜… Early on in the blog’s history I wrote several one-shots that would later evolve into multi-chapter fics – The Secretary, The Pact, Control and Absolution. Like in the beginning of a relationship when the infatuation’s still burning hot, I kept all of these babies updated at a decent clip. So in my overzealous mind, every series was ‘ongoing’. But then, as the various plots thickened, I found myself over-extended. So one-by-one each series fell by the wayside.

Then I got my shit together and completed Control. Now I’m working steadily on completing The Pact.Β Unless I get hit by a truck or something, I have every intention of completing the other two SK series as well. What I’ve had to learn the hard way, I guess, is that at least for me I need to concentrate on my long fics one at a time. Otherwise I risk getting overwhelmed and shutting down altogether. On the other hand, I’ve found that it is good to switch gears from time to time to keep things fresh. But hey, there’s one-shots and mini-series for that, right? πŸ™‚

All of this rambling is to say that I realize more transparency is needed with regards to which series are being actively updated vs. not. The way my third-party, blog series plugin works also doesn’t help with the ambiguity. For example, The Pact, which is still ongoing, might look at first glance to be complete since the blue banner at the top of the latest post says: “This entry is part 68 of 68 in the series” :/ I wish it had more of an Ao3-like format option, where it said something like “68 of ?” instead, but such is life (and plug-ins lol)

The Fanfiction page of the site provides more detailed info on series status, of course. But I thought it would be nice to add an indicator that showed more at a glance what the series status is. If you check the series’ names now, you’ll notice that status tags have been appended to them in square brackets. These tags correspond to the statuses listed on the Blog Fics section of the Fanfiction page (Complete, Hiatus or Indefinite). Hopefully this little change will help to make it more clear where my current focus is at. πŸ™‚

(As a side note regarding fic updates, the main reason why I’m only updating 1 to 3 times a week is because 1) I don’t generally write on weekends so that I can spend time with friends and family and rest my brain and 2) my present work schedule makes writing on Mon/Tues next to impossible. Hoping to get to a point where I can write 5 days a week, but we’ll see…

Oh, and also, on a positive note, I’m working on building up a catalog of original fiction – so that takes up a good chunk of my creative time as well πŸ™‚ Hoping to share more on that with y’all in the not-so-distant future <3)
