SessKag Series: The Cave, Part 14

This entry is part 14 of 15 in the series The Cave [Complete]

“Oi, what’s up with toad-face?” Inuyasha asked as he entered the hut, prodding at Jakken with a single clawed toe.

Sagged against the doorframe, the near-catatonic imp swayed listlessly, unable to bring himself to utter so much as a ‘Curse you, half-breed!’ Bulbous yellow eyes glazed over with a sheen of oily tears, he continued to stare aimlessly at the floor, lost in his own personal misery.

“Sesshoumaru-sama didn’t show up today, either,” Rin answered glumly as she helped Kaede wash the rice.

“Aye,” the elderly priestess said. “‘Tis been nearly a fortnight since he left, has it not?”

“It is strange,” Miroku remarked from his seat by the hearth. “Though he’s hardly one for conversation, I’d become accustomed to his presence among us. Surely no misfortune has befallen him?”

Plopping down next to the monk, Inuyasha scratched at the velvety point of an ear. “Feh, that asshole? Not likely.”

“Perhaps he will return tomorrow,” Sango said hopefully, as she set the kettle to boil.

“Yes,” Kikyou agreed, her dark gaze trained a little too intently upon the onions she was slicing.

Beside her at the cutting board, Kagome hunched her shoulders, hacking the meat into strips more forcefully than before. Though no one was addressing her or even looking at her, she felt the weight of their expectation hanging in the air. Her jaw clenched as she remained silent still.

“Kagome-chan,” Shippou asked abruptly, “do you know why Sesshoumaru’s been gone for so long?”

Kagome tensed, nearly splitting her thumbnail in two. Bringing the knife edge down hard against the tabletop, she looked up to find every pair of eyes in the room fixed upon her. Her face flooded scarlet.

“No,” she said shortly, tightening her grip on the handle of the blade. “Why should I?”

Shippou’s tail frizzed, his features paling. “N-no reason…”

A brittle, glassy silence ensued. At last, Sango’s voice rose to break it.

“Kagome-chan,” she ventured, “I think what Shippou-kun means is that up until now you and Sesshoumaru-sama had obviously become quite close…”

The miko gaped. “Obviously?

Tipping a knuckle to his chin, Miroku added slyly, “…And in light of this growing intimacy, perhaps the two of you had a clash of sorts…”

I-intimacy?!” Kagome choked out. “What’s with that emphasis?—what the heck are you trying to imply?”

“…Enough pussyfooting around already,” Inuyasha groused, glaring over at her. “Did you reject ‘his highness’, or what?”

Kagome’s cheeks threatened to self-combust. “Reject him? You think Sesshoumaru left town because we got into some sort of lovers’ quarrel? Do you even know how crazy that sounds?!”

Inuyasha’s blunt look didn’t waver in the slightest. Clearly, this was exactly what he thought. Glancing around at everyone else’s unfazed expressions, it was clear that this was exactly what they all thought.

With undue vehemence, Kagome wrenched up the knife and went back to cutting. “You’ve got it all wrong. Sesshoumaru and I don’t have that kind of relationship.” Blinking past the sting in her eyes—stupid, stupid onions—the miko grit her teeth. “We never did.”

~

Dinner that night turned out to be a rather strained and stifling affair. Escaping out onto the porch afterward, Kagome breathed in deeply of the chill wintry air, but this did little to cool her temper. With a shudder, she collapsed to the wooden steps, her eyes glaring up at the crescent moon overhead. Its sharp icy curve glinted mockingly back.

Kagome scowled.

For two weeks now Sesshoumaru had been gone without a trace—an impromptu vanishing act that he and his alter ego had in common, it seemed. Kagome’s scowl deepened.

In all honesty, she still wasn’t sure how to feel about any of this. Part of her was relieved at his absence. After turning her back on him at the bridge that day, all she could think was to put as much distance between herself and the maddening daiyoukai as possible. In the span of a few minutes her brain had come perilously close to short-circuiting from shock, and it had been an intensely agonizing experience.

Even revisiting it in her mind, she was overwhelmed by the implications of her discovery.

The passage of time had helped her to digest it, somewhat. Now that she knew the true identity of the ‘spirit’ of the cave, logically, at least, the perceived inconsistencies in his behavior toward her made a lot more sense. Yet the ‘why’ of it all still eluded her. Without knowing anything of his motivations, she couldn’t help but feel foolish and deceived, despite his dubious displays of concern—and perhaps even affection—for her.

And as for how she felt about him

Well, that was another can of worms entirely. Kagome groaned, something of her heated sentiments escaping her in a breath of glittering smoke. Clapping the inside of an elbow to her eyes, she eclipsed the moon from her view out of pure and simple spite.

The end result of all this insanity was that her emotions toward him were in helpless turmoil. And like it or not, she knew that they would remain as such until she had the chance to speak with him again—

If and when he had the nerve to show his face around her.

Grimly aware of this fact, Kagome picked herself up and went back inside to face her knowing friends.

  1. Awww, leave me hanging!!! Just kidding- thank you for the update.

Does he really feel rejected? I can’t really see that. Maybe instinctively but not logically. Idk. I’d be upset if I were Kagome too. That revelation would’ve left her feeling too exposed, no wonder she had to retreat… A Sesshomaru POV next maybe?

    1. So glad you enjoyed the update, Jess!! I’d also be upset if I were Kagome lol

      Hope you enjoy the conclusion!

      <3

  2. I think he’s off planning some sort of grand gesture intended to make his position crystal clear. Hope he doesn’t disappoint!

  3. I missed the juicy details! Finally caughtu up! Kagome better recognize and claim that Sesshoumaru-D. He was ready for the taking at that bridge 🤣

    1. “Sesshoumaru-D” Bahahaha omg that’s the best XD

Hope you enjoy the final chapter!!

  4. OMG Kagome. Why does she always overthink things? Didn’t she tell her then unknown lover after snusnu in the cave that she wanted to know him and that she wanted to be with him all the time?

Big Doggie obliged and hung around dirty peasants and chickens in the village to see her often and even told her about himself. He even gave her another orgasm by the well too.

Don’t be the bruha who lost the guy because you were too dense and clueless.

I feel like bitch slapping some sense into her. Can’t she see it from his perspective why he couldn’t come out earlier and tell her it was him? His cheating daddy who ditched his wife and his son for some human princess coochie affected his view of relationships.

Kagome, get your act together and go after that striped hottie.

    1. Hehe she did tell him that indeed XD

Love the enthusiasm, Doug!! Always enjoy hearing your take on things <3

Hope you enjoy the end of the series!! <3 <3

  5. So Sesshomaru went off to lick his wounds while Kagome gets glares and the third degree from her academy award winning friends. I want to be surprised, but that makes sense for him. He’ll probably wait an entire month and then show up during the full moon like, “Hey~ Remember that thing?”. 🤣🙄

Sangonand Shippi may have been considerate, but Miroku and Inuyasha weren’t beating around the bush at all. LMFAO Kagome is lucky Miroku didn’t catch into her hang-up over the word “intimacy”. I thought he’d pounce, but maybe he wanted information more than he wanted to make fun of his friend.

    1. Bahaha “academy award winning friends” is so spot-on XD

So glad you enjoyed Miroku’s moment in this story! I was waiting to work him in at the right time hahaha 😉

Hope you enjoy how the story ends!!

  6. I’m so glad you agreed with me about her foot in mouth disease. She’s clearly not gettin any better…

Sesshomaru did his best. He did. How else was a demon like him going to oblige her with her request? She got to know him like no other would. He, in a way, was just as vulnerable as Kagome. Bare bones and raw. The feeling of that nerve being exposed and so vehemently denied, will cause some bumps in the road. He may just chalk it up to mistakes made in the many centuries of his life and move forward. She better not get too lost in confusion. Just wondering who is big enough to get pass this and make the first move. Yes, he could have told her, but how exactly would that have played out. His hesitation and her insecurities made this so complicated.

She got it from ALL angles at Kaede’s. That was a classic Inuyasha inquiry if you ever read one. I almost felt bad with her, everybody eluding to the COMPLETELY OBVIOUS closeness the two of them shared. How on Kami’s green earth was she only one that didn’t realize it. I mean….frustrating!!! Only thing missing from that scene were the owlish looks thrown her way with crickets in the background.

Ok but to play Devil’s advocate, she was in turmoil over her overly hormonal reactions to everything. Finally getting through her feelings for Inuyasha and not going to school. Then mystery lover ostensibly ditching her only to return in the guise ofa companion she was honestly harboring feelings for. She’s a hot mess- edo style. I don’t think I could trust myself when I am emotionally all over the place. God, I don’t miss bring a teenager. >_<

After her anger bomb finally dissipates, she needs to recall all that happened in their intimate time together and pull that head adorned with ebony locks out of her ass and realize this is exactly what she wants. Don't waste time on this girl!

    1. I love this, char. The humor and melodrama in this story feels so like the canonverse, making it a very comfy read. 🙂 glad to hear you’re doing okay from your previous posts!

      1. Aww, thanks so much, Lace! So glad you’re enjoying this one – and hope you’re doing well yourself!!

        <3 <3

    2. “That was a classic Inuyasha inquiry if you ever read one.” Hahaha so glad you thought so, Pebbs! Gotta love him XD

Lord knows I don’t miss being a teenager either…geez, what a confusing time. Although that said, I’m still pretty freaking immature, so the confusion is still very real to me LOL

Loved hearing your commentary on Sesshoumaru’s POV – and so hope you enjoy the end of this mini-series!!

      <3 <3 <3

  7. I understand why Kagome is upset and it’s not fair to her that Sesshomaru purposefully kept her in the dark the entire time. I’m ‘LOLing’ at the fact that EVERYONE thinks that Kagome and Sesshomaru had a lover’s spat🤣

    1. Hahaha so glad you liked that scene! If I were Kagome, I’d be upset too…

Hope you enjoy the last part!!

      <3 <3
