The Pact Side-Stories: The Centipede Hunt, Part 6

This entry is part 6 of 6 in the series The Centipede Hunt

Before Kaori or Shin could make a move, a pair of bandits appeared across the clearing, shouldering their way through the branches. One was skinny and greasy as an eel and the other was big and beefy as a ox. They held something brown, bloody and hoofed between them, hanging from a stick.

“…Goddamn pig weighs a ton,” the skinny one complained. He had a whiny, nose-whistling kind of voice, and his sweatdrops were almost as big and oily as Jakken’s.

The big oaf grunted. “Aye, you keep on sayin’ that.”

“Aye, and it keeps on bein’ true.”

“Goin’ after this boar here was yer idea. Boss said we shouldn’t leave camp ‘til he got back.”

Boss said,” the shrimpy guy mocked, spitting into the weeds. “Well, we’re not the only ones who left camp, now are we? Don’t see Juri and Yuuji settin’ ‘round here on their asses just ‘cause ‘Boss said so.’ ‘Sides, we brung back dinner, so who’s gonna complain?”

The big guy nodded. “Hard to jus’ set around doin’ nothin’.”

“Don’t I know it,” the skinny guy grumbled, as they trudged past the hobbled horses into the camp and dropped the slashed-up dead boar to the grass. “Feels like all we been doin’ lately is jus’ settin’ around. Movin’ from one spot to th’other on our asses,” he added, hopping sideways in a squat.

The big oaf chortled. The little shrimp grinned and squat-hopped sideways again.

Shin never would’ve guessed that today of all days he’d come across a living, breathing human version of Jakken. He and Kaori shared a glance, then together as one they turned and began to creep on tiptoe back through the shade toward the trees. With those two dummies busy goofing around on the other side of camp, Shin figured they’d be able to slip away unnoticed, no problem.

In his light-footed hanyou form it’d have been no problem, anyway. But as a clumsy human, he stepped down a little too hard on a branch hidden in the grass, and it gave under his foot with a loud sharp crack. Kaori froze mid-silent-ninja-step, shooting him a glare. Shin smiled sheepishly back.

“‘The hell was that?” the shrimpy guy exclaimed, straightening from his squat and striding past the dead boar and around the piles of loot toward them.

“‘Nother boar, maybe?” the beefy guy grunted stupidly, trundling along behind. “Huh? Look, Seiichi—it’s a couple a’ kids!”

“Aye, Daiji, I see that,” the skinny one snapped, his yellowish eyes narrowing as he crossed his arms at the chest.

Shin and Kaori shared an anxious frown. She knew as well as he did that it was too late to make a break for it now. They couldn’t hope to outrun them. These were full-grown men who could chase them down easy, and they had horses besides.

The only option now was to outsmart them.

Well, Shin thought, looking the pair of them over, shouldn’t be too hard.

  1. Human version of Jakken 😭😭 And it’s more than likely that the real Jakken is lurking somewhere out of sight, waiting to be Shin’s hero.

This is either gonna be real funny or a total disaster. RIP bandits.

  2. Oooh these bandits are pretty close to the village, no? 😬 Maybe it’s lucky that the kids found them before the bandits wandered their way. Those poor villagers already fled one disastrous war.

  3. This is like a meeting a strange, beautiful noblewoman in the middle of nowhere. You never know if she could be a fox in disguise, trying to lure you in so she could eat your liver.

In this case, Seiichi and Daiji don’t know that they’re about to be puppy chow 🤣

  4. AAAhhh I love that without Sesshoumaru’s youkai awesomeness Shin can be just as clumsy as Kagome. It might be a weakness to others but I find that her most charming trait 🥰 She’s all messy and bright-eyed and wild hair, and her son’s human form is just like her 😍😍😍

I know it’s a totally off-topic thought when Shin and Kaori are facing off against a couple of potentially dangerous criminals here but I can’t help it 😂

  5. Maybe if they play it right, Kaori and Shin can finesse their way out of this without bloodshed 🫢

  6. On the bright side, if the kids don’t succeed in talking their way out then they’d still end up bagging loot💰, gear AND horses. Plus that big fat boar for the village. Plenty of war spoils 🔥

  7. Shrimp-Jakken and Ox are about to have a really bad day and they don’t know it yet.

  8. Haha these bandits really just left all of their valuables here without a single guard? I see that outsmarting them may not be so hard at all 😂

Hoo boy I’m glad they aren’t a band of expert mercenaries like Bankotsu’s gang or something. Shin’s powerful, but he’s still just a baby puppy. At this age the hardest trial of his life should be learning fractions.

I hope he makes them run circles in their own brain!
